解説
このレッスンでは比較をするときの強調などの方法を練習しいます。
- ずっと → much, a lot, far
- ちょっと → a bit, a little, slightly
※ slightly = わずかに
He is much smarter than his sister.
彼は彼の姉よりずっと頭がいい
This picture is slightly more expensive.
この絵の方がわずかに高価です。
Kaitlyn runs even faster than Lin.
ケイトリンはリンよりさらに早く走ります。
Better and better, more and more
言葉を繰り替えすことで、どんどん変化が起こっているということを強調することができます。
Construction will continue, this road will become longer and longer.
工事は続きます、この道はどんどん長くなります。
New technologies make the world more and more convenient.
新しいテクノロジーは世界をより便利にするのです。
倍数
倍数を表現したい場合は times を用います。
ただし、2倍を表すときは一般的に twice を用います。これについては別のレッスンで練習します。
- This book is 3 times thicker than that magazine.
- That publisher is 5 times older than this one.
- This stone is 7 times more expensive.
any other, no, nothing
any や no を用いることで「他の何よりも」という表現ができるようになります。
特に no や nothing を使った言い回しは日本語の感覚にはないので練習して慣れていきましょう。
Sara is more famous than any other Japanese pianist.
サラは他のどの日本人ピアニストより有名だ。
No car is faster than Michelle’s one.
ミシェルのものより早い車はない。
Nothing is more valuable than life.
命より価値があるものはない。
